Capecord — Connecting the Independence Community

Capecord is public Discord server for independence supporters in the Western Cape, founded on 5th of March 2021, by Robert King. It stands for a free, sovereign Cape Republic, where all people (no matter their race, religion or gender) are given equal opportunities and where they have a government that works for them and is controlled by them.

If you’re new to Discord here’s a brief explanation.

In the recent “Year of the Rat” (aka 2020), when millions were ordered to work remotely, one of our team suggested that we adopt Discord. My immediate reaction was to roll my eyes and bemoan the fact that there were already so many channels through which we could communicate.

My knee-jerk response couldn’t have been more misplaced. Discord turned out to be a game-changer for our team.

Everyone knows of Zoom, but not Discord, which is a little bit strange but understandable since the app originated with the gaming community. If you are uninitiated, imagine Discord as a mixture of your favourite messaging app, say WhatsApp / Telegram (or better still Signal), with the addition of screen-sharing, video and all sorts of other features like channels to organise your discussions.

Seen side-by-side, Zoom now looks like a clumsy version of everyone’s favourite virus (Windows Vista). Discord has the feel of an ultra-modern Apple Mac.

While gamers are still on the platform in abundance, people from all walks of life have discovered the powerful community building tools that are available in Discord at no charge and it is now a central part of everyday life, providing a real-time collective of people with similar interests.

Suffice to say, next time I’ll pay more attention to what the gamer has to say.

They are opposed to the unfair transfer of billions of rands a week from the province to a national government that does not have the Cape’s best interests at heart. ANC officials squander Western cape tax revenue on themselves and their cronies — meanwhile, the long-struggling people bear the cost. Capecord believes that achieving independence would return R140 billion to the province each year - enough to half taxes and double spending.

Decades after South Africa threw off the shackles of white colonialism, the ANC has begun to surrender the nation once again, this time to the crypto-empire of the Chinese Communist Party. Capecord opposes this and believes that the Western Cape should not only become independent of South Africa, but it must also be free of the tentacles of Beijing. They are of the view that ‘citizens of the Western Cape born after 1994 were born free and they must stay free’.

Capecord believes that big, old states are slow and inefficient, while newer, smaller nations are able to try out new ideas, see if they work and if these ideas are a success — then become a model for the rest of the world. They hope that by experimenting with new systems, the Western Cape would become Africa’s laboratory of ideas and be a beacon of hope to other freedom fighters across the continent.

What this server will do?

The server aims to become the central hub for supporters on the internet, where they can discuss and distribute ideas regarding how to achieve independence, as well as creating the blueprints for a world-class country. In addition to this, it has offline capabilities as well. Capecord aspires to assist advocates when setting up their own pro-independence events: whether that be campaigning at the enterance of a PicknPay, protesting outside municipal offices, or holding a mini-rally in a bar. Then, once the event has been organised, it is announced to the entire community — so that we can get our supporters out at every event. Large crowds → more eyeballs → more support. Simply, rinse and repeat.

And that’s just the start. As the independence movement, server and public’s desire for freedom all grow, so will the services we provide.

Capecord is the tool which can bring the community together.
