Cape Party

The Cape Independence movement was started by Tim Miller of the Committee for the Cape Republic (the CCR) in 1993, making the first appeal for the Cape Republic.

After many years' civic petitioning, civic pressure and talks with government, it became clear that the route which is needed to demonstrate the supreme Democratic (Political) Will of the People of the Western Cape on Cape Independence legitimately, is the political route - the ballot in elections - of which the results cannot be ignored (unlike that of petitions which are often ignored) due to administrations being driven by politics, in this case the DA. Demonstrating this mandate on the ballot, is what the Cape Party believes will force the Western Cape Premier to grant a referendum in the Western Cape.

This as well as complete disillusionment with the failed government system, inspired Jack Miller to found the Cape Party in 2007, registering the Party at the IEC in 2008 and leading it steadfastly until date towards obtaining the goal of Cape Independence, having documented the beautiful and logical 1993 vision (for the Cape Republic's decentralised Direct Democracy governance system based on the very successful Swiss Canton system and a capitalist Free Market system similar to Singapore's highly successful economic system) formally in the Cape Party Manifesto in 2007.

The Cape Party was created, is tailor-made, for Cape Independence specifically and exclusively. The Cape Party's quest is Success at Secession (whilst furthering the interests of the Cape and its people with urgency) and has no national agenda or vision currently and no immediate political aims other than this. Once the sovereign Cape Republic is firmly in place, the Cape Party would lend assistance to other Secession movements in South Africa, firmly believing in the basic human right to self-determination.

The Cape Party is thus a civic secession movement firstly and is secondly 'wearing a political jacket' as a secession party, an a-typical political party which provides WC Voters the legitimate platform to use their vote for demanding Cape Independence.

The Party is driven by committed 100% voluntary secessionists (including leadership) being regular people with day-time jobs, free from career politicians (as opposed to typical or regular political parties which are driven by career politicians) and uniquely the only civic secession movement brave and tough enough to tackle the very challenging political route simultaneously, making Cape Party members the true foot-soldiers of the Cape Independence battle. These activists are currently highly focused, sacrificing valuable time, energy and resources to ensure success in the critically important upcoming Local Government Elections, which the Party has had its eyes on to win government representation and being guaranteed to succeed at it.

The Cape Party is also the only political party which can give assurance of Cape Independence because it is the only party of which the manifesto contains clear vision and policy regarding this goal. Should any other political party at any time clearly and officially spell out sovereign Cape Independence as its goal in its manifesto as well, the Cape Party would make every effort to work very closely with such a party, including forming a coalition, in order to increase the necessary political pressure on the WC Premier together.

The Cape Party has representation and membership in all communities in the Western Cape and will be contesting the upcoming 2021 Local Government Elections in all Western Cape Wards and Municipalities. (In 2009, the Party contested elections for the first time and in the 2019 Western Cape Elections the Party surprisingly took 9th place overall out of 34 parties, making headway towards demonstrating that mandate's growth and towards forcing a referendum).

An overall 50%+1 election result for the Cape Party, obviously would result in a referendum being called straightaway but, more realistically, with as little as 3 or 4% of votes, the Party could succeed at forcing a referendum, provided the ruling DA loses majority standing: Should the DA's votes be below 50%, the Cape Party as kingmaker in a power-sharing position would make the DA a much better and more accountable party and would be able to make a Cape Independence Referendum an unavoidable issue in government, demanding it officially, increasingly.

Thus, all votes for the Cape Party will be used to:

  • Keep the ANC out of the Western Cape
  • Keep the DA accountable
  • Force a referendum

The Cape Party has driven the Cape independence vision alone for the most part of 14 years and is happy that many civic organisations have now in recent years also grasped the vision and made it their own. Civic movements' important role of raising awareness amongst voters is applauded by the Cape Party and the Party continues to make every effort to strengthen cooperation between all stakeholders, playing a leading role in the monthly Cape Independence Leaders' Forum meetings chaired by Dr Peter Hammond.
